India has the largest number of hungry people in the world. Improvements in nutritional status have not kept pace with the country’s impressive success in spurring economic growth in the past few decades. Despite all its achievements, however, India tops the list of countries in the world with the largest share of the global extreme poor. 37.2 % of the population (more than 400 million people) are officially estimated to be living in absolute poverty. With 15.2 % of the population categorised as undernourished—and a prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years at 38.8 %—India is ranked 80th among 104 countries in the current Global Hunger Index compiled by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI 2015). Over 3000 children die every day in India from poor diet-related illnesses and undernutrition accounts for 24 % of deaths of children under five years of age1.
Parivartan, through its work has found out that few reasons of people not getting food are: -
- - Most of the needy in urban areas are migrant workers,
- - These people don’t have ration cards/ have ration cards of other states,
- - Don’t know whom to approach
Large number of Urban slum dwellers and daily wagers staying in cities need help in various forms other than food, nutrition and monetary help. These people are mostly illiterate and have no formal knowledge of government schemes for their benefit. These people need help in terms of:
- - Education and awareness
- - Filling various forms
- - Opening Bank Accounts
- - Accounts for Cooking Gas
- - Forms for school admissions
- - Registering for AADHAR card
